About Shadwell Estate

Evidenced by earthworks understood to be medieval strip fields, the land in Shadwell park was farmed during the Middle Ages.

Shadwell as a landholding was originally endowed to Rushford College which had been founded in 1342 by Edmund Gonville, (later founder of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge). 

The college was dissolved by Henry VIII, and the lands and buildings eventually came into the possession of Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel and Surrey, and son of the 4th Duke of Norfolk.

Robert Buxton, a lawyer and surveyor to the Duke of Norfolk, established the family’s wealth in the late 16th and early 17th century. 

He built a house at Rushford, south of Shadwell Estate but on the north bank of the Little Ouse. This was a secondary property to the families main residence at Chammonz, Tibbenham.

It was a descendant, John Buxton (1685-1731) who built the first house at Shadwell between 1727 and 1729. This small but elegant house designed as a summer lodging would have been set amongst gardens, orchards, terraces and lawns.

The Parkland was later transformed through the planting of trees (awarded the Royal Society of Arts Gold Medal in 1767), creation of a lake in 1754, and building of a walled garden. 

By 1786 the Buxton family had relocated to Shadwell on a permanent basis.

Blore 1840 - 1843

John Jacob Buxton, 2nd Baronet, son of the lake-builder Sir Robert Buxton (1st Baronet) commissioned Edward Blore with the extension of Shadwell Lodge in 1839. This work extended the house to the south, adding a tower and bay to the west, refacing the east frontage and creating a new courtyard and office wing to the north.

Teulon 1856 - 1860

Only 16 years after Blore’s work was completed, the house was extended again to include a new courtyard to the north of the house, a new approach from the west, and works to reface the existing house with a number of features including a new tower. This work was commissioned by Robert Jacob Buxton (3rd Baronet and son of John Jacob Buxton) and his mother Elizabeth Dowager Lady Buxton, to create a house for large-scale entertaining.

Samuel Saunders Teulon had already worked with the Buxtons to rebuild the Parish Church in Brettenham and restore the old college at Rushford. Teulon turned Shadwell Lodge into a monument of neo-Gothicism.  

The building costs must have taken their toll on the Buxton family finances, as in 1899 a catalogue of Shadwell Court’s remaining furniture and effects notes the sale was “in consideration of extensions and alterations to the mansion”.

The buyer of the house, Sir John Musker, was a co-founder of the Home & Colonial Stores.

The Musker family, lived in the house between 1898 and 1992, and also contributed alterations, upgrades and adaptations to the house and wider estate.

Army Requisition

Shadwell Court, Park and Estate was commandeered for military uses in World War 1.

Snarehill farm still hosts the remnants of an airfield, which was used as a training base in WW1, and a decoy base for enemy aircraft in WW2.

Shadwell Court was used at the end of the war in 1944 as a reception centre for Indian Prisoners of War in transit to nearby camps.

The Musker family continued live at and enjoy the house post World War 2 until Sir John Musker (son of the earlier Sir John Musker) died in 1991.

The Estate was acquired in the early 1980's, shortly followed by the purchase of the Nunnery land, which jointly became the home of the infamous Shadwell Stud, establishing its world-renowned thoroughbred horse breeding and racing legacy. 

Shadwell Stud was then developed and grown to include interests across the UK, Ireland, the US, and worldwide, including stud farms, training yards, pre-training and rehabilitation yards and staff housing.

In 2021 Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the founder of Shadwell Stud, sadly passed away.

Over the course of his four decades as an owner and breeder, Sheikh Hamdan became one of the most influential figures in international horseracing. His blue and white silks have been carried to success in major races all over the world, including by two homebred colts in the Derby.

He was champion Flat owner in Britain on nine occasions, the first in 1990 and the last in 2020. He left an equine legacy in the shape of world champion Baaeed, a horse whose pedigree traces, on the sire’s side, to Green Desert, the first stallion stood by Shadwell in the UK, and, on the dam’s side, to Height of Fashion, the foundation mare bought by Sheikh Hamdan in 1982.

Revered for his kindness and loyalty as well as for his in-depth knowledge of racing, he died in 2021 at the age of 75. 

The Estate embarks on an ambitious new chapter, focusing on the repurposing of stud assets no longer required for the racing and stud enterprise into more commercial uses.
